Wicked smartly weaves political themes, unconventional heroes, and unexpected tenderness within a medley of catchy showtunes, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.

Snopsis

The tale follows Elphaba, the illegitimate daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity issues, Elphaba makes it into the highly regarded Shiz University, where she rooms with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites hardly get along at first but soon become fond of each other. 

Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when Elphaba notices nefarious acts against the Animals, a sentient race often tormented by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba seek the Wizard for help, but the Wizard unfortunately offers little assistance. A disillusioned Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving everything else behind. 

Meanwhile, Galinda climbs the social ladder, marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an influential lifestyle. Elphaba returns and accidently wins Fiyero’s admiration as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love grow unburdened, or will Elphaba’s mission for justice push Fiyero away, distance her from friends, and ruin her?

Production

Wicked kicked off its first debut 20 years ago at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its influence spread, it broke into new locations year after year, achieving international acclaim across multiple countries and continents. Its capacity to bring in audiences also prompted Hollywood producers to release a two-part motion picture based on the Broadway show, that released November 2024.

Wicked earned numerous awards during its heyday in the 2000s, including Two Drama Desk Awards, 3 Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album. The cast and crew performing at Uihlein Hall at Marcus Center For The Performing Arts on Thursday 31st July 2025 promise to deliver an epic performance.
