Originating from Broadway, it’s time for Wisconsin to laugh their heads off as the musical comedy Book of Mormon will be coming to in Milwaukee at Uihlein Hall at Marcus Center For The Performing Arts on Thursday 27th February 2025.
The mindblowing and sometimes rude and crude musical Book of Mormon is focused on of two Mormon Elders in training to become missionaries – Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who are sent on a mission to a remote village in Uganda to share their faith with its residents. The play deliberately satirizes religious belief in general through the eyes of the pair, as Cunningham comes up with an unorthodox manner to teach religion to the locals.
The Book of Mormon was created by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, the same creators of the cartoon TV series South Park and the musical Avenue Q.

Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham are two missionaries of the Latter-day saints (LDS) tasked with a mission to a native Ugandan village. Their goal is to convert the locals to their faith, but they find out upon their arrival that their job is more demanding than they had imagined, given the pile of local issues that the villagers are against such as oppression, an HIV/AIDS epidemic, and poverty among others. The pair then gradually realize that they must employ more creative methods to get through to the locals than the usual means that they know.
It is in the pair’s difficult journey where the performance of The Book of Mormon is outstanding – allowing a serious topic of religion to be blasphemed and injected with comedy, showtunes, and a bit of foulmouthed language, yet still remaining unobjectionable to its audience. Since its premiere in 2011, the The Book of Mormon has been received positively despite its manner of sharing its story. The Mormon church itself supported the musical, buying ads and releasing marketing marketing material that stated: “You’ve seen the play, now read the book.” In its West End performances, the repeatedly sold-out shows were proof of The Book of Mormon’s success. Though most viewers were already expecting a shock given the content and theme of the play, according to The Guardian, it was even to their shock that “suddenly you realize you’re in for not just humour but a a thought provoking tale that just keeps on getting better.” The musical’s run in Australia also loved by theatre fans, with the Sydney Morning Herald even declaring that the Book of Mormon is a “dynamite production of a show that has consistently been called the funniest Broadway musical of all time.”
It's no shock that because of the musical's creativity, The Book of Mormon’s several shows worldwide have earned it nine Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Circle Critics awards, four Olivier Awards, and two Helpmann Awards.
This upbeat, happy, and totally silly musical continues its tour in Wisconsin.
