Synopsis

This universal tale of fame, fortune, and musicals, explores the depths people delve to satisfy their craving for fame. The Show is a gripping and engaging story told through music and dance.

The production is the second most frequent performance ever to appear on Broadway, surpassed only by "The Phantom of the Opera". Chicago tells the story of two rival and vaudevillian dancers named Velma and Roxie locked in jail for murder.

While Velma is already a well-known vaudevillian entertainer, Roxie is a aspiring performer trying to build her fame. Although they were both jailed for murder they had different motives. Velma's intent was jealousy and rage after finding her husband and sister having an affair. Meanwhile, Roxie's motive was calculated ambition and ruthlessness. Thus unlike Velma's action, which was driven by emotion, Roxie's strategy was calculated, and was intentionally used to attract publicity.

Throughout, Chicago also reveals the hidden game played by law enforcement and civilians. Roxie's and Velma's lawyer Billy Flynn, who excels at defending women prisoners alleged of murder is seen turning the trial into spectacles, by manipulating his client's case into dramatic performances composed of drama and sympathy.

While Matron "Mama" Morton is portrayed helping the two criminals maintain a connection with the outside world, mainly with Billy, and exploiting the other convicts for her advantage.
