Uihlein Hall Information

Uihlein Hall

Uihlein Hall is located at 929 North Water Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It’s part of the Marcus Performing Arts Center (MPAC) – a mission-based, non-profit organization dedicated to bringing professional arts and cultural programming to Southeastern Wisconsin.

The center is home to several major resident companies, including The Florentine Opera, Milwaukee Ballet, and Black Arts MKE.

MPAC is a flagship venue in the Downtown Milwaukee Theater District, a walkable neighborhood where you’ll find venues like the Bradley Symphony Center, Miller High Life Theatre, and Turner Hall Ballroom. With a combined 15,000 theater seats across its venues, the district boasts one of the highest concentrations of theater seats per capita in the United States. Uihlein Hall is one of the largest venues in the district and accounts for more than 2,000 of these seats.

Uihlein Hall hosts a variety of performances but is best known for Broadway. Together with Broadway Across America, the venue brings the razzle and dazzle of New York to the Badger State. A grand proscenium stage, tiered seating, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting make the Uihlein Hall ideal for touring Broadway productions.

Recent renovations saw more than US$4 million invested in Uihlein Hall. Updates include new flooring and carpet, fresh paint, plush red upholstery, and a new seating configuration. Even the air is fresh thanks to a fully automated HVAC system equipped with state-of-the-art needlepoint ionization technology. It completely replaces all air in the building every 17 minutes while actively removing bacteria and virus-spreading particles.

Venue history

Uihlein Hall has been a stalwart of Milwaukee’s cultural landscape for decades. The venue opened in 1966 as part of the Marcus Performing Arts Center, a landmark building designed by Chicago-based architect Harry Weese.

Look familiar? Weese is the renowned architect behind the striking Brutalist stations of the Washington Metro system. He also spearheaded restoration projects for iconic American landmarks like Union Station and the Field Museum, both in Chicago.

Wondering where the unique name comes from? The hall is named after the Uihleins, a prominent American family known for their ventures in business, philanthropism, and politics. Fun fact – the Uihleins once owned the legendary Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, which was later bought out by Pabst.
